New Zealand Stocks Slip Amid Rising Oil Prices
New Zealand stocks experienced a decline on Friday due to concerns about inflation triggered by rising oil prices. Brent crude surged to approximately $107, causing investors to become cautious about higher energy costs. The S&P/NZX 50 index fell 0.95% (down 130.68 points) to 13,580.33 as a result.
The increase in oil prices reflects worries that the Middle East conflict may lead to a tightening of global oil supply, which can cause shipping, manufacturing, and airline costs to rise. This, in turn, may prompt central banks to be slower to cut interest rates due to higher inflation levels.
A local industry group, BusinessNZ, reported mixed signals from data: while manufacturing still expanded in August, momentum cooled, and employment stalled around the breakeven level. Meanwhile, Westpac, a New Zealand bank, flagged that a developing El Niño could increase drought risk, particularly for pasture-based agriculture.
