New Zealand's Entertainment Economy Booms as International Productions Flock In

New Zealand has become a hub for international film and entertainment production, thanks in part to its successful hosting of productions like Avatar and The Lord of the Rings.

However, what's often overlooked is the country's growing domestic entertainment industry, which is catching up quickly. Wellington and Auckland have been building out streaming production hubs, online gambling markets, and other infrastructure aimed at visiting crews and locals alike.

The government has also made changes to the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate, reducing the minimum spend threshold from $15 million to $4 million. This shift is meant to attract mid-budget international projects that wouldn't have qualified before, and it's having a significant impact.

As a result, dozens of smaller international shoots are now taking place in the country each year, bringing crews who need somewhere to spend their evenings and money. Meanwhile, New Zealanders are also producing their own content, with films like Whina, a biopic about Māori leader Dame Whina Cooper, drawing crowds that rival those of international blockbusters.
