Nonfarm Payrolls: The Key Driver of DXY Volatility

The US Nonfarm Payrolls report is one of the most closely watched economic releases in global financial markets, influencing interest rates and creating volatility across currencies, gold, and equity indices.

The nonfarm payroll figure estimates the monthly change in the number of US jobs outside several excluded categories, including agriculture and private households. The report combines information from two separate surveys: the establishment survey, which produces the headline payroll figure, industry-level job changes, and average earnings data; and the household survey, used to calculate the unemployment rate and labor-force participation.

A strong nonfarm payroll number can support the US Dollar Index (DXY) if traders believe it gives the Federal Reserve more reason to keep interest rates high. However, the reaction is not automatic, as market expectations, wage growth, unemployment, and revisions to earlier reports all matter.
