North American Large Caps: Poole's Picks Amidst Market Caution
Christine Poole, president and co-chief investment officer at Davis Rea, shared her outlook on North American Large Caps in an interview with BNN Bloomberg. She pointed out that equity markets are scaling the 'wall of worry' due to robust corporate earnings growth and sustained investment in artificial intelligence (AI). However, beneath the surface, narrow market breadth and momentum-driven gains warrant caution.
The Canadian economy is showing signs of returning to growth after two consecutive quarters of GDP contraction. A rebound in exports and business investment is supporting this recovery, with improving business sentiment pointing to stronger capital expenditure. While household purchasing power remains constrained, a 30-day grace period before the implementation of new tariffs may be more a negotiating tactic than finalized policy.
Poole's top stock picks for North American Large Caps include Siemens AG (SIEGY US), Stryker (SYK NYSE), and Pembina Pipeline (PPL TSX). These companies are well-positioned to benefit from secular growth trends, including AI, automation, digitalization, and electrification. They also offer attractive dividend yields of 2%, 1.1%, and 4.4% respectively.
In the US economy, GDP growth is tracking near the two percent range, with business investment remaining firmly anchored by AI-related capital spending. However, forward-looking inflationary risks are building due to renewed Middle East hostilities, looming tariff threats, and sustained demand for AI infrastructure.
