Regional Development Minister Shane Jones has welcomed the fast-track application for Northland Shipyard and Dry Dock project. The application was lodged with the Environmental Protection Authority under the Fast-Track Approvals Act 2024 (FTAA) on behalf of the project proponents.

The proposed shipyard will provide a domestic option to maintain, service, and repair large vessels in New Zealand, reducing reliance on overseas dry docks and associated costs. The facility is expected to boost the economy by $1.05 billion over 38 years, with an average of 1700 jobs created during the three-year construction phase and 450 jobs during its operation.

The project will be located next to the western edge of the existing Northport commercial area within Whangārei Harbour. Jones said that enabling more marine maintenance activity in New Zealand will support the domestic economy, help deepen skills and supplier base, and benefit the Northland region.
