Nvidia Drives US Stocks Higher as Tech Sector Soars
The US stock market saw a positive start to Thursday, August 27, with technology stocks leading the gains. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose by 1.27% to 26,462.29, while the S&P 500 increased by 0.62% to 7,723.46. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.29% at 53,621.56.
The strong performance of technology stocks can be attributed to Nvidia Corporation's better-than-expected results and upbeat outlook for revenues. The company's shares rose by around 6%, with its market capitalization reaching approximately $5.43 trillion. Other tech stocks such as ServiceNow, Adobe, and Broadcom also saw significant gains.
However, not all stocks performed well, with several defensive sectors experiencing losses. Johnson & Johnson declined by 1.97%, Merck fell by 1.9%, and Charter Communications lost 2.20%. Netflix also dropped by 2.09%.
The market is currently awaiting Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole on Friday, which may provide further insight into the Federal Reserve's next move. Investors will be closely watching inflation data, treasury yields, oil prices, and semiconductor policy for any developments that could impact the market.
