Nwosu Seeks Overhaul of Traditional Igbo Apprenticeship System

Uche Nwosu, former Chief of Staff to the Imo State Governor, has called for a modern overhaul of the traditional Igbo apprenticeship system. Speaking at the 2026 Igbo National Convention in Canada, he argued that the current model needs to adapt to meet the demands of a technology-driven global economy.

The traditional Igba Boi, Imu Ahia and Imu Oru model has historically provided mentorship, practical training, business networking, and access to capital. However, Nwosu identified several challenges, including weak documentation, unclear settlement arrangements, exploitation of apprentices, and inadequate exposure to technology and modern business management.

He proposed a new framework featuring written agreements, defined training periods, clear responsibilities, structured learning, safe working conditions, transparent settlement arrangements, and recognised certificates of completion. Nwosu also advocated for credible dispute-resolution mechanisms to protect both masters and apprentices.
