NWT Premier Stands Firm with Canada Amid Trade Deal Collapse
Northwest Territories Premier RJ Simpson has thrown his support behind Prime Minister Mark Carney's decision to walk away from trade talks with the US, saying Canada will focus on 'building our strength at home'.
Carney called off negotiations late Friday after American negotiators attempted to make last-minute changes that disadvantaged Canada. The collapse of the deal has led to a 50% tariff on $28 billion in Canadian goods imposed by US President Donald Trump.
In response, Carney said Canada will match those tariffs 'dollar for dollar'. Simpson echoed this sentiment, saying the NWT stands with Team Canada and will continue to work towards building its economy and creating jobs. He highlighted several key projects, including the Mackenzie Valley Highway and the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor, which he believes will strengthen Canadian supply chains and create new opportunities.
The breakdown in trade talks has led to warnings of negative impacts on households on both sides of the border. However, most premiers have expressed support for Carney's decision, with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre calling for continued efforts to negotiate a tariff-free trade deal.
