New Zealand consumer confidence has made a sharp rebound in July, according to the latest ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence index. The index jumped from 91.3 in June to 99.3 in July, an 8-point increase that suggests households are becoming more optimistic about the economic outlook.

The improvement was broad-based, with all five sub-indices of the survey recording gains. Households reported a more favorable view of their own financial situations compared to a year ago, and forward-looking components such as expectations for the economy in 12 months also strengthened.

Analysts point to easing inflation pressures and growing expectations that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) may begin cutting interest rates sooner than previously anticipated. The next RBNZ monetary policy decision is scheduled for August 14, and the July confidence data will be among the key inputs considered by the board.

Economists at ANZ noted that while the improvement is encouraging, the data still points to a subdued consumer outlook. 'The recovery in confidence is welcome, but it is from a very low base,' the bank said in its report. 'Households are still grappling with high mortgage costs and a weak housing market, which will likely cap the pace of any recovery in spending.'

The ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence index measures household sentiment on current and future economic conditions, personal finances, and spending intentions. A reading above 100 indicates optimism, while below 100 signals pessimism. The index remains below its long-term average of around 112.
