NZ Government Cuts Red Tape for Hospitality Sector

New Zealand's hospitality sector is set to benefit from regulatory relief as the government releases its Hospitality Sector Review. The review, led by the Ministry for Regulation, aims to simplify and reduce bureaucratic hurdles for businesses in the sector.

Minister for Regulation David Seymour said that the current rules are 'dumb' and contribute to closures, adding that red tape and bureaucracy made it hard for the sector to bounce back from Covid-19. He emphasized the need to cut red tape and let Kiwi businesses focus on growth.

The review identified several issues with the current regulatory framework, including excessive paperwork, inefficient processes, high fees, and disproportionate barriers to entry. It also highlighted cases where businesses were required to meet with multiple officials from different agencies, making it difficult for them to navigate the system.

Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Louise Upston noted that the hospitality sector is a vital part of New Zealand's economy, supporting jobs and local communities. She emphasized the government's commitment to removing barriers to growth and supporting businesses and workers in the sector.
