NZ Joins OECD in Publishing Monthly Inflation Data
New Zealand is set to join the rest of the OECD in publishing monthly inflation data, a change that will significantly impact businesses and their pricing strategies. As of July 2027, Stats NZ will release its first official monthly Consumer Price Index covering June data, marking a major improvement to New Zealand's economic statistics.
The quarterly lag has allowed some firms to be slow to pass costs through or reverse them when costs fell. With the introduction of monthly CPI, this window will shrink in both directions, making it more difficult for companies to hide behind outdated numbers. This change will particularly affect contracts, wage rounds, and pricing discipline.
Government Statistician Colin Lynch emphasizes that this is not simply a matter of publishing existing CPI more often. The change involves a digital-first rebuild of how prices are collected, checked, and released, with faster pipelines and more automated quality control.
