NZ Unemployment Hits 5.6% Amid Rising Costs and Uncertainty
New Zealand's labour market statistics for the second quarter of this year reflect the challenges faced by employers in April, May, and June. According to Finance Minister Nicola Willis, these months were difficult due to rising costs and uncertainty.
The data shows an unemployment rate of 5.6 percent, a reflection of the hard decisions made by businesses to hold off on hiring or expanding during this time.
Despite the difficulties, recent jumps in business confidence and hiring intentions are encouraging signs for the economy.
Minister Willis highlighted the government's focus on policies that boost economic growth and build business confidence. This includes backing the tourism and international education sectors, fast-tracking major construction projects, investing in infrastructure, and introducing Investment Boost to incentivize businesses to invest in equipment leading to productivity gains.
