NZ Working-Age Population in Flux Amid Demographic Shifts

New Zealand's working-age population is undergoing significant changes, according to data analysis by Keith Rankin. The country has seen a surge in middle-aged and older individuals, leading to increased demand for ambulance services. In fact, St John reported four days of all-time record callouts due to a mix of winter illnesses, chronic conditions, and demographic shifts.

Rankin created charts to visualize the population by generation, labeling them as B (born around 1950), J (Jones, born around 1960), X (born around 1970), Y (born around 1980), M (millennial, born around 1990), Z (born around 2000), and (alpha, born around 2010). Chart 1 examines older generations, while Chart 2 looks at younger ones.

The analysis shows that the population of a generation remains relatively stable until people reach their forties, after which mortality rates increase. In New Zealand, where international migration is significant, populations aged 20-45 are expanding. The charts indicate that Gen J and Gen X are experiencing higher mortality rates compared to Gen B.

The data also reveals a 'baby blip' generation (Gen M) augmented by immigration, resulting in a substantial population bulge. However, this may not continue for Gen Z, as the current economy suggests reduced immigration and potential emigration of this age group.
