NZD Declines as US Dollar Gains Ahead of PCE Index Data

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) declined against the US Dollar (USD) on Wednesday as the greenback gained strength ahead of the release of key inflation data. The NZD/USD pair traded around 0.5960 during Asian hours, down from modest gains in the previous day.

The US Dollar received a boost as traders anticipate the Personal Consumption Expenditures index data, which is closely watched by the Federal Reserve for its preferred measure of inflation. The Fed's policy decision in September will also be influenced by this data, with traders looking for guidance from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday.

However, the upside of the US Dollar may be restrained due to easing safe-haven demand following reports that Iran and Oman discussed establishing a temporary joint maritime corridor in the Strait of Hormuz. This development could lead to reduced tensions in the region and alleviate some of the safe-haven demand driving the US Dollar higher.

The New Zealand Dollar, on the other hand, may find support as markets anticipate a 25-basis-point rate hike from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) at next week's policy meeting. This move would align with forecasts pointing to a year-end policy rate of 3.0%.

Additionally, Brown Brothers Harriman's Elias Haddad noted that New Zealand's latest retail data delivered a negative surprise, with total retail sales volume dropping -0.5% q/q (consensus: 0.2%) vs. 1.0% in Q1, driven by fuel, motor vehicle and parts retailing.
