NZD Market Overpricing RBNZ Hikes, Says BNY Analyst
The New Zealand dollar is trading above its 12-month average, but market expectations of two more Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) hikes by year-end may be overpriced, according to BNY's Geoff Yu. Foreign holdings of New Zealand government bonds rose to 58.9% in July 2026, with nonresident holdings reaching NZ$122.47 billion.
Yu doubts the market pricing, citing well-anchored inflation expectations and stable nontradables inflation as reasons for not tightening monetary policy further. He notes that domestic activity remains robust, but points out that inflation expectations are relatively well-anchored.
The RBNZ may focus on headline price risks, which could soften the case for additional hikes, according to Yu. Nontradables inflation is relatively stable, and this trend could influence the central bank's decision-making process.
