NZD Surges as RBNZ Rate Hike Expectations Intensify
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) has strengthened against the US Dollar (USD) as markets expect further interest rate hikes from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ). The RBNZ's tightening monetary policy outlook is a key driver behind the NZD/USD advance, with investors pricing in up to three additional rate hikes by early 2027. This expectation has increased after the latest inflation data revealed hotter-than-expected numbers.
The recent decline in US Treasury yields has also contributed to the pressure on the USD, reducing its relative appeal and contributing to the NZD/USD advance. However, geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran remain a concern, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, which could limit further gains in the NZD.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that current yields do not reflect the economy's underlying fundamentals, suggesting an increased focus on fiscal consolidation. The Treasury plans to at least double its long-dated debt buyback operations, starting September 9, but this move has been seen as a debt-management swap rather than a direct attempt to address rising borrowing costs.
