NZD Surges as Traders Speculate on Intervention
The New Zealand dollar surged by over 1% against the US dollar after traders speculated that another intervention may be necessary to support the currency. The sudden move was unexpected, with no clear macro catalysts or news driving it.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) Governor Adrian Breman stated in a recent review that he believes a gradual removal of monetary stimulus is appropriate to return inflation to target while still supporting growth and employment. He also expects core inflation to continue increasing over the coming months and for the economy to strengthen over the next year.
Bank economists are divided on whether the RBNZ will raise its Official Cash Rate (OCR) by another 25 basis points in October, bringing it to 2.75%. This move would be a third consecutive OCR hike, ahead of New Zealand's general election in early November.
