NZD Surges to Highest Level Since June Amid Fed Rate Cut Expectations
The New Zealand dollar has surged to its highest level against the US dollar since June, driven by a weakening greenback and improving risk sentiment.
This uptrend is largely attributed to growing expectations of Federal Reserve interest rate cuts. According to CME Group's FedWatch tool, traders now price in a nearly 70% chance of a quarter-point rate cut at the March meeting, up from around 50% a month ago.
The New Zealand dollar has also benefited from domestic factors, with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand signaling that it may keep its official cash rate higher for longer than previously expected due to above-target inflation. Additionally, stronger-than-expected dairy export prices have provided support to the NZD.
Technical analysis suggests that the NZD/USD pair has broken above its 200-day moving average, attracting momentum buyers. The next resistance level is seen around $0.6250, a level last tested in June.
