NZD Tumbles Below 0.6000 Amid Disappointing Retail Sales Data
The New Zealand dollar (NZD) fell below 0.6000 against the US dollar on Monday, as weaker-than-expected retail sales data weighed on the currency. The NZD/USD pair dipped to around 0.5970 in early Asian trade, after it was announced that New Zealand retail sales had fallen by 0.5% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2026.
The disappointing data missed expectations for a 0.1% decline and followed a revised 1.0% rise previously reported as 0.9%. By contrast, retail sales ex autos rose 0.7% QoQ in Q2 versus a revised 1.1% gain in Q1.
The NZD's weakness was also influenced by broader geopolitics, with US, Iran tensions supporting the safe-haven bid for the US dollar and weighing on the pair. This comes as Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the threat of new US sanctions following President Donald Trump's announcement to intensify pressure on Iran's economy.
