NZX 50 Dips Amid RBA's Inflation Warning
The New Zealand stock market saw some mixed results on Tuesday, with the S&P/NZX 50 index slipping further into the red. The benchmark index dipped by 27.58 points, or 0.2%, to 13,860.66, with 24 stocks declining and only 22 gaining in value.
The energy-heavyweight companies Mercury NZ and Meridian Energy were major drags on the index, falling by 1.7% to $6.57 and 1.1% to $5.57 respectively. In contrast, Contact Energy rose 0.8% to $9.04 after reporting its annual result.
The market's overall performance was influenced by the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) decision to keep its cash rate unchanged at 4.35%. The RBA warned that it would take necessary steps to rein in elevated inflation, which saw the New Zealand dollar gain against its trans-Tasman counterpart.
