NZX Falls 0.89% Amid Global Inflation Worries
The New Zealand Stock Market (NZX) has seen a decline in its main large-cap equity benchmark, the S&P/NZX 50 Index. The index closed at 13,737.66 on August 13, down 0.89% from the previous day's close.
The market remains sensitive to global inflation, oil prices, interest-rate expectations, and geopolitical developments. New Zealand's annual inflation rate stood at 4.10% in June, while the official interest rate was 2.50% in July.
The decline in the NZX 50 Index was led by major stocks such as Mainfreight, which fell 3.72%, Westpac, down 1.59%, and ANZ, down 1.25%. Energy stocks also showed weakness, with Meridian falling.
However, small caps managed to increase their price, with the NZX SmallCap Index rising 0.64% on August 13. This divergence between large companies and smaller stocks is a notable aspect of the market's performance.
