Oil Hits $100 a Barrel as Tensions Mount, Weighing on US Stock Markets
The US stock indexes are set to open lower on Wednesday as oil prices surge past $100 a barrel for the first time since July. The deepening tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing US-Iran war have increased concerns about a broader conflict, making investors wary of market risks.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's focus on controlling prices has boosted expectations of a rate hike this month, with markets now seeing a 62.4% chance of a 25-basis-point increase when the central bank meets next week, according to CME's FedWatch.
However, some investors remain cautious due to concerns about circular deals in AI-related stocks, which have turned the mood hesitant as companies at the heart of the AI boom turn to financing each other. Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial, warned that these deals may eventually lead to a tangled web of risks.
The US Treasury's buyback announcement later in the session is also expected to influence equities, which are typically pressured by elevated yields on risk-free government bonds. Meanwhile, investors will closely watch the Consumer Price Index report scheduled for Friday and Producer Price Index data on Thursday for clues on the Fed's rate path.
