Oil Price Rebound Sparks Bond Yield Surge Amid Middle East Tensions
Oil prices surged on Monday after negotiations between Oman and Iran over reopening the Strait of Hormuz stalled, increasing concerns about supply disruptions and a potential military escalation.
The spot price of WTI oil jumped above $82 per barrel, a 10% increase from last week's trough. However, it remains 13% below its July peak.
This sudden rebound in oil prices is causing ripples across financial markets. Bond yields have been rising, with the 10-year US Treasury yield surpassing 4.7%, a level seen only three times since Trump's win in November 2024. Higher yields will likely boost this week's bond auctions but also increase borrowing costs for both the US government and corporations.
The US dollar has gained some ground, but movements are measured due to the summer lull. The yen is on the backfoot again, with some analysts attributing its weakness to the Bank of Japan's reluctance to intervene in currency markets. Gold prices have fallen sharply in early trading, retreating from a potential breakout above $4,381 per ounce.
