Oil Price Surge Fails to Boost Dollar Amid US Treasury Intervention

Oil prices surged to over $102 per barrel, but the US dollar failed to receive the usual safety bid as investors typically expect. Instead, the euro and yen held firm near recent highs.

A jump in crude oil prices usually translates into a stronger dollar due to higher inflation expectations and a more hawkish Federal Reserve policy. However, this time around, bond yields remained high, and traders priced in another European Central Bank rate hike. The EUR/JPY cross-rate was also under scrutiny as the US Treasury worked with the Bank of Japan to support the yen by selling euros rather than dollars.

This intervention is believed to have taken place in late July, and it may have contributed to the dollar's muted reaction to the oil price spike. The choice of intervention matters, as selling euros can push up the EUR/JPY cross-rate while leaving USD/JPY less sensitive to risk-off headlines.

JPMorgan views this development as consistent with its trading range for USD/JPY, which remains between 155-165. For macro and FX traders, this is a reminder that moves in the dollar index can be influenced by policymakers' decisions on cross-currency channels.
