Oil Price Surge Triggers Global Market Sell-Off Ahead of ECB Decision
The global economy is facing increased uncertainty due to rising tensions between the US and Iran. The threat of supply disruptions has pushed crude oil prices above $100 a barrel, with Brent crossing triple digits for the first time since July.
This surge in oil prices has led to inflation fears, causing equity markets to fall across the board. The S&P 500 dropped 0.5%, while the Nasdaq 100 and Dow fell 0.3% and 0.8% respectively.
US Treasury yields rose sharply on Wednesday, with the benchmark 10-year yield reaching a high of 4.85%. This is the highest level since 2008, when the yield briefly topped 5% for the first time in over a decade.
The European Central Bank (ECB) is set to announce its interest rate decision today, with investors expecting further tightening through 2027. Meanwhile, the US Treasury will auction $30 billion of 30-year bonds later this week.
