Oil Prices Keep Yen Under Pressure, USD/JPY at Critical Resistance
The Japanese yen remains under pressure due to elevated oil prices, which have reinforced its negative correlation with Brent crude. According to Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH), Japan's reliance on energy imports means that higher crude oil prices directly impact the country's trade balance and consequently the yen.
As a result, USD/JPY is trading near the key 160 resistance level, which has historically been a trigger for Japanese authorities to consider currency intervention. In 2024, the Ministry of Finance intervened when the yen weakened past this threshold, and market participants are now watching for similar action.
However, BBH notes that intervention alone may have limited effect if oil prices stay high and the interest rate differential between the US and Japan remains wide. This creates a delicate balancing act for the Bank of Japan and the Ministry of Finance as they try to stem excessive volatility without disrupting market function.
