Oil Prices Soar Amid US-Iran Tensions, Fed Rate Hike Hopes Dented
Oil prices surged on Friday as global stocks fell amid heightened geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran. The Brent crude oil futures settled at $88.52 a barrel, up 1.67%, while U.S. futures finished at $82.40, up 1.42%. Market participants are closely monitoring the situation, with many expecting further volatility in the coming days.
US economic data released on Friday showed that retail sales unexpectedly fell 0.6% in July, signaling softer consumer spending and reducing expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike at next month's meeting. The US dollar also weakened as a result of the data release.
The tensions between the US and Iran have been escalating in recent weeks, with the US threatening to ramp up economic pressure on Tehran. This has led to increased uncertainty in global markets, causing investors to become more cautious.
