Oil Prices Surge Amid Saudi Pipeline Shutdown and AI Fears
The global economy is facing a double whammy of rising oil prices and AI-related fears. Oil prices surged on Monday after Saudi Arabia shut down its key East-West pipeline due to drone attacks by Yemen's Houthis, exacerbating concerns about sustained inflation that could prompt higher interest rates from the US Federal Reserve.
US diesel fuel prices hit a new record above $6 a gallon, and Brent international crude oil contract climbed towards $110 a barrel. The dollar gained strength on the back of rising oil prices and expectations of a Fed rate cut on Wednesday.
Antropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that AI development is outpacing our ability to control it, and investors are reassessing the speed, scale, and monetization timeline of the sector's capital expenditure boom. Analysts widely expect the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates since US inflation remains above the central bank's 2% target.
