Oil Prices Surge as Global Markets React to Hormuz Tensions
The global markets experienced mixed results on Monday, as oil prices surged while Wall Street and European shares faced pressure.
Brent crude futures rose by 3.06% to $86.11 per barrel, with U.S. crude jumping 3.26% to $80.73. However, global benchmark prices remain below late April's peak of over $126 a barrel.
The Strait of Hormuz situation continues to be a focal point, with Iran insisting that the United States must meet several demands before the waterway can reopen. The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell by 0.16%, while Europe's broad FTSEurofirst 300 index dropped by 0.14%.
The key event for markets this week is the U.S. inflation reading for July, which will impact Fed officials' thinking on rates. Analysts at BofA reported that nearly 90% of S&P 500 results showed earnings per share up by 30% year-on-year after excluding investment gains at Alphabet and Amazon.
