Oil Prices Surge as Markets Eye Crucial US Inflation Data
Global markets were mixed on Wednesday as oil and gold prices rose ahead of the US inflation data release. The price of Brent crude, the international benchmark, increased by 0.9% to $89.67 a barrel, while US benchmark crude climbed 0.9% to $83.98.
Gold also saw a gain, edging up 0.8% to $4,400.44 an ounce, while silver rose 1% to $65.30 an ounce.
The market's attention is focused on the US inflation reading, which is expected to show a slight decrease to 3.4% in July from 3.5% in June. A lower inflation rate could ease pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates, which would curb inflation but also make borrowing more expensive for households and businesses.
The war with Iran continues to be a concern, with oil prices fluctuating widely due to the conflict. The average cost of a gallon of regular petrol in the US has risen to $4.01, up from less than $3.14 a year ago, according to AAA.
