Ontario Urged to Help Iranian Students Amid US-Iran Conflict

Iranian international students studying in Ontario are facing significant financial hardships due to the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran, according to a coalition of student associations.

The coalition, representing students from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), University of Toronto, York University, and Queen's University, is calling on the province to provide emergency financial assistance programs for Iranian students.

Fata Niaizi, an international fourth-year computer science student at the University of Toronto, said his family faces immense financial hardship in supporting his education abroad due to Iran's tanking currency.

Niaizi noted that when he arrived in Canada in 2022, one Canadian dollar was worth 22,000 tomans. Today it's worth over 135,000 tomans, making it difficult for his family to send him money.
