Orcel's Commerzbank Blueprint Sparks Culture Clash Fears
UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel has presented Commerzbank with a blueprint for transformation, one that aims to slash costs by €1.3 billion and boost revenue growth.
Orcel's plan, which he claims can be replicated at Commerzbank, involves shrinking the bank's 'bloated centre' by reducing management layers and increasing sales efforts.
At UniCredit, Orcel has achieved a 10-fold increase in shares since his arrival, driven by record profits and cost controls. However, executives warn that this discipline has created strain internally, with dozens of long-serving senior executives leaving the bank.
The integration process for Commerzbank is expected to be challenging and prolonged, according to European Central Bank supervisors, who have also highlighted cultural differences and tensions created by the hostile bid.
Orcel's strategy at UniCredit has been described as 'a continued search for operational excellence' aimed at securing the bank's long-term future. However, Chicago Booth professor Kilian Huber says Orcel will need a different skillset to manage the culture and transition process at Commerzbank.
