PBOC Set to Fix Yuan Rate Amid Market Volatility

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) is set to determine the USD/CNY reference rate, a key indicator of China's currency policy. The estimate for the rate is around 6.7364, according to Reuters. This daily fixing is one of the most closely watched signals in Asian foreign exchange markets.

The PBOC operates a managed floating exchange rate system, which allows the renminbi (yuan) to trade within a prescribed band around a central reference rate, or midpoint. The current trading band permits the currency to move plus or minus 2% from the official midpoint during onshore trading hours.

The PBOC determines the midpoint based on various inputs, including previous day's closing price, movements in major currencies, and domestic economic considerations. This means that policymakers have discretion to guide market expectations through the fixing.
