Peso Slides as US Dollar Gains Strength Amid Rising Trade Deficits
Remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFW) have long been a vital source of foreign exchange for the Philippines, providing a stable buffer against external shocks. However, these steady inflows are now being outweighed by other factors that have pushed the peso to record lows.
The US dollar has strengthened, and the country's trade deficits, capital flight, and high energy import bills have taken their toll on the currency. Analysts say this combination of factors is exposing the fragile underbelly of Asia's import-dependent economies.
For years, remittances from OFWs have been a pillar of the Philippines' finances, with annual inflows totaling US$36 billion. This source of foreign exchange has helped cushion the economy through past crises, but its limits are now being tested.
