Pill Backs Early Rate Hike to Contain Inflation Pressures

Bank of England Chief Economist Huw Pill is advocating for an early interest rate hike to contain rising inflation pressures and prevent them from becoming more persistent.

Pill, who backed a rate increase in July, argues that acting sooner could help prevent temporary increases in inflation from becoming entrenched and reduce the risk of businesses and workers adjusting wages and prices in ways that reinforce higher inflation.

The Bank of England has been closely monitoring the risk that higher energy costs linked to the Iran conflict could feed into broader inflation pressures. Pill's comments suggest that the central bank could favour a gradual and preventative approach if it concludes that inflation risks are becoming more persistent.

Despite Pill's hawkish stance, financial markets are assigning a relatively low probability to a rate increase at the Bank of England's next meeting, with interest rate futures indicating only around 15% chance of a quarter-percentage-point rate hike in September.
