Pill Backs Rate Hike to 4% Amid Iran War Inflation Fears
Bank of England Chief Economist Huw Pill has come out in favor of raising interest rates to 4% to combat inflation caused by the Iran war. Speaking at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Pill argued that a prompt increase in policy rate would help prevent 'catch-up' dynamics in wages and prices.
In his speech, Pill said that implementing and communicating an effective rate hike could head off some potential insidious nominal dynamics that threaten to make temporary departures from target inflation more persistent. He also warned against fine-tuning the policy rate while facing significant uncertainty around energy prices.
Pill's comments reflect a growing divide within the central bank over the appropriate policy response to inflation. While the majority of committee members have favored a wait-and-see approach, Pill's explicit call for a 4% rate signals that the hawkish camp is prepared to push for earlier action.
