Pill Calls for Interest Rate Hike Amid Inflation Fears
Bank of England Chief Economist Huw Pill has called for interest rates to be raised in response to ongoing inflationary pressures. In a speech at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, Pill expressed discomfort with the current 'wait-and-see' stance taken by his fellow policymakers.
Pill warned that holding interest rates steady while awaiting firmer evidence on how the conflict involving Iran will influence UK inflation is no longer tenable. He argued that raising rates to 4% would deliver a clear signal of the Monetary Policy Committee's willingness and ability to address upside risks stemming from events in the Middle East.
Pill stood as one of just two members of the nine-member MPC who backed an interest rate rise in July, when the majority voted to hold benchmark rates at 3.75%. He emphasized that a prompt increase in interest rates could help head off persistent inflationary pressures and prevent temporary departures from target becoming more entrenched.
