Pill Pushes Early Rate Hike to Curb Inflation Pressures
Bank of England Chief Economist Huw Pill has advocated for an early interest rate hike to mitigate potential inflation pressures, citing the impact of the Iran war on prices. In a speech prepared for delivery to the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, Pill argued that acting sooner could prevent temporary increases in inflation from becoming more persistent.
Pill's comments reflect his hawkish stance, which was echoed by two other members of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee who voted for an interest rate increase in July. However, their position was outvoted by other policymakers seeking greater clarity on the longer-term inflation impact of the conflict.
Despite Pill's call for preventative action, financial markets assign a relatively low probability to a rate hike at the next meeting, with interest rate futures indicating just over 15% chance of a quarter-percentage-point increase in September. Expectations are higher for the following meeting in November, with the probability rising above 70%.
