Pill Pushes for Early Rate Hike Amid Energy Price Fears
Bank of England chief economist Huw Pill has called for an early increase in Bank Rate to 4 percent, arguing that this could prevent higher energy costs from leading to persistent wage and price increases.
Pill made his case during a speech to the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, stating that the Bank cannot wait for uncertainty to disappear before acting. He has previously voted for a rate rise to 4 percent at recent meetings.
The concern is not that long-term inflation expectations have broken loose, but rather that households, companies, and government may attempt to recover income lost to higher energy costs through wage bargaining, contracts, and pricing decisions.
Pill believes this 'catch-up' dynamic was underestimated during the 2022-23 inflation episode. He argues that if it becomes established, bringing inflation back to target can require a sharper and more economically costly tightening than an earlier rate rise.
