Pill Pushes for Early Rate Hike as Inflation Fears Linger

Bank of England Chief Economist Huw Pill believes an early interest rate hike could help prevent temporary inflation increases from becoming more persistent. According to Reuters, Pill argued that acting sooner would reduce the risk of businesses and workers adjusting wages and prices in ways that reinforce higher inflation.

Pill's comments come after a split vote within the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) over how to address rising inflation pressures following the Iran war. Three members, including Pill, voted for an interest rate increase in July, while others opted to keep rates unchanged.

Financial markets are assigning a relatively low probability to a rate hike at the next MPC meeting, with just over 15% chance of a quarter-percentage-point increase in September, according to Reuters. However, expectations rise above 70% for the following meeting in November.
