Pill Pushes for Interest Rate Hike Amid Middle East Uncertainty
Bank of England chief economist Huw Pill has reiterated his call for an interest rate hike to tackle inflationary pressures sparked by the Middle East energy shock.
Pill made his comments in a speech at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, where he expressed discomfort with the Monetary Policy Committee's (MPC) 'wait-and-see' approach.
He noted that it has been six months since the onset of conflict in the Middle East and that the magnitude of its implications for UK inflation remains unclear.
Pill argued that raising interest rates to 4% would deliver a clear signal of the MPC's willingness to address emerging inflationary pressures.
