The Bank of England's chief economist, Huw Pill, has emphasized the need for interest rates to rise quickly in order to counteract the threat of inflation. Speaking at an event in Edinburgh, Pill stated that there are 'dangers' associated with waiting for clearer evidence of the impact of conflict in the Middle East on the UK economy.

Pill was one of only two members of the nine-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) who voted in favor of a 0.25% interest rate rise from 3.75% to 4% at their July meeting.

The economist argued that 'clear, prompt and decisive policy action and communication' are necessary to steer markets and reduce uncertainty. He also pointed out that it has been six months since the conflict in the Middle East began, but the magnitude of its implications for UK inflation remains unclear.
