Platinum Prices Surge as Safety Concerns Hit World's Largest Mine
Platinum prices have surged by over 6% in recent trading sessions as the metal continues to recover from its downturn. The rebound comes on the back of gold, which has also seen a price increase following a US dollar weakness due to falling oil prices.
The platinum market has been boosted by the production halt at one of the world's largest mines, Impala Platinum's Rustenburg complex in South Africa. Following six worker fatalities over the past 12 months, including two this month, Implats suspended mining operations from July 24 to July 28 for a comprehensive safety review.
Rustenburg is the company's flagship operation and accounts for nearly half of its platinum-group metals (PGM) output, with expected FY2026 production of 1.67-1.76 million PGM ounces. The shutdown is estimated to reduce production by approximately eight days during FY2027.
