Platinum Prices Surge as US Dollar Weakens and Rate Hike Expectations Diminish
Platinum prices are surging today due to a weakening US dollar and diminishing expectations of a September Federal Reserve rate hike. The probability of a rate hike has collapsed to 33% from over 51% a month earlier, following weak U.S. jobs, inflation, and retail sales reports.
The Consumer Price Index report came in cooler than expected, significantly dampening Fed rate hike expectations and removing a key headwind that had been suppressing prices. Additionally, the World Platinum Investment Council forecasts a supply deficit of 297,000 ounces in 2026, with total demand expected to fall 9%.
Emerging demand from AI infrastructure and data-center expansion is adding a new layer of longer-term bullish sentiment to the metal's outlook. The broader market environment is also providing a constructive backdrop for platinum's move, with strategists attributing precious metals strength to expectations that the economy is drifting toward a stagflationary environment.
