Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada's Conservative Party, argued on Bloomberg Television that easing US tariffs on Canadian resources is key to cooling American inflation. He claims that dropping these tariffs would provide cheaper energy for consumers.

The pitch was made against a backdrop of escalating trade friction between Ottawa and Washington, with the US imposing 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian imports in July, prompting Canada's retaliatory counter-tariffs on American products.

Poilievre emphasized that Canada is the largest external energy supplier to the US economy, exporting ten times more oil than Mexico. He also highlighted the country's significant deposits of critical minerals needed for defense hardware, electric vehicle batteries, and advanced manufacturing.
