Portugal's Consumer Prices Fall 0.5% in July, Annual Inflation Still Above Target
Portugal's consumer price index fell by 0.5% in July, marking a reversal from June's slight increase of 0.1%. This decline is attributed to lower costs in housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, as well as a seasonal dip in clothing and footwear prices.
Energy prices have softened after a volatile first half of the year, providing some relief to households. Transport costs also contributed to the decline, with fuel prices easing from June levels.
The annual inflation rate remained positive at 2.3%, slightly down from 2.5% in June. This suggests that while short-term price pressures are cooling, underlying inflation is still above the European Central Bank's 2% target.
