Pound-Dollar Rally May Stall Near Recent Highs
The Pound-Dollar exchange rate (GBP/USD) has made a strong recovery in July, gaining 1.75% and reaching a high near 1.3495. However, MUFG's analysis suggests that this rally may stall near recent highs due to the Bank of England's hawkish hold.
The Monetary Policy Committee left interest rates unchanged, with policymakers continuing to emphasize inflation persistence, second-round effects, and the risks posed by energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty.
While Catherine Mann's comments placed greater weight on inflation risks arising from Middle East tensions and volatile energy prices, Governor Andrew Bailey explicitly warned markets not to leave the meeting believing that the MPC was 'edging towards a hike.'
This distinction is important for Pound Sterling, as it suggests that the BoE remains concerned about inflation but is not yet preparing investors for another tightening move.
