Pound Edges Higher as Traders Await UK Jobs and CPI Data
The British pound is trading cautiously ahead of key UK jobs and inflation data that could influence the Bank of England's next policy move.
Market participants are positioning for a busy week of economic releases, including the employment report and consumer price index (CPI) figures on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. These indicators will provide clearer signals on whether the Bank of England will begin cutting interest rates in the coming months.
Economists expect average earnings excluding bonuses to have risen by 5.7% in the three months to November, down from 5.9% in the previous period. Meanwhile, headline CPI is projected to have increased by 3.8% year-on-year in December, down from 3.9% in November.
The data will be pivotal for the Bank of England, which has maintained a hawkish stance compared to other central banks. A softer jobs report or a sharper-than-expected drop in inflation could prompt traders to bring forward their rate-cut bets, potentially weighing on the pound.
