Pound Falls as BoE Hike Expectations Plunge
The British Pound underperformed in recent trading as market expectations for an interest rate hike by the Bank of England (BoE) decreased.
Analysts at Deutsche Bank noted that markets 'dialed back' their expectation for BoE hikes, with the implied probability of a September move dropping from 60% to 30%. Additionally, they highlighted that '31bps of hikes [were] priced by year-end (-11.4bps on the day),' indicating investors reassessed the near-term tightening path.
Market experts view remarks from BoE Governor Andrew Bailey as indicating a high bar for an interest rate hike in the near term, despite his statement that 'If Mideast conflict persists and we get second-round effects, we will likely need to raise rates.'
The Pound Sterling recovered most of its early losses against the US Dollar, as the latter fell back amid doubts about the Federal Reserve's (Fed) willingness to use interest rate hikes to tame elevated United States inflationary pressures.
