Pound Holds Gains Amid UK Inflation Spike and Interest Rate Uncertainty
The British pound has maintained its upward momentum against the dollar, despite concerns over inflation and interest rates. The currency rose by 0.14% to $1.3552 on Wednesday, following a weak jobs report that had previously dampened sterling's performance.
However, investors are still cautious about the UK's economic resilience, particularly with higher oil prices driven by the US-Iran tensions lingering in the background.
The July annual consumer price inflation hit 2.9%, exceeding the Bank of England's forecasted increase to 2.8% last month. While economists polled by Reuters anticipated the 2.9% spike, Ruth Gregory from Capital Economics noted that 'domestically generated inflation remains contained.'
Market traders expect at least one interest rate hike by the Bank of England this year, but a Reuters poll indicates that most economists foresee no rate changes.
